Throughout her career, Navi Pillay has played a significant role in advancing human rights and international justice. She became the first woman to establish a law practice in Natal Province in 1967 and later made history as the first Black woman to serve as a judge on South Africa’s High Court. Pillay served as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where her work contributed to landmark legal recognition of sexual violence as a possible act of genocide. From 2008 to 2014, she served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, advocating for equality, justice, and the protection of vulnerable communities. In recognition of her contributions to human rights and international law, she was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
