Jean Drèze (born 22 January 1959) is an economist of Belgian origin who became an Indian citizen in 2002. He is recognised for his academic work and social activism, particularly in areas concerning poverty alleviation, hunger, nutrition, education, and economic inequality in India. His research has also informed discussions on public policy and social welfare. Drèze studied mathematical economics at the University of Essex before completing his doctoral studies at the Indian Statistical Institute in New Delhi.
